Looking to spark a love of reading in your little one? Ms Tina, our School Principal at the Fo Tan campus, shares her 5 tips on how to ignite a lifelong passion for books in young children. From cosy reading corners to interactive storytime fun, here are five simple ways to make reading a joyful part of your child’s everyday routine!

#1
Read to Inspire
Children learn a lot from their role models. So, put down your phone and stop scrolling! Show your love for reading by enjoying books, magazines, or articles. Discuss what you’re reading to spark your child’s interest!

#2
Develop a Reading Habit
Building a reading habit is key to sparking your child’s interest in books! Set aside a few minutes each day to read together. Mix it up with various types of books, from picture books to simple stories, to keep it enjoyable.

#3
Create a Cozy Reading Nook
Set up a cozy reading corner filled with pillows and blankets. Make sure books are easily accessible for your little ones! Let your child decorate the nook with their favourite books and encourage them to spend time reading there.

#4
Make Storytime an Adventure
Make reading a daily adventure! Pick exciting books and help your child get familiar with the story, then act out the characters together. Use different voices and props to really bring the story to life!

#5
Pick the Right Books
Engaging books with diverse themes can definitely pique your child’s interest. If your child has started to read, look for books with repetitive phrases or predictable patterns to further enhance their reading skills. Classics like “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” are fantastic for young readers!
Reading with your child is more than just a daily activity. It is a chance to bond, explore new ideas and nurture a lifelong love for learning. With these simple tips, you can turn storytime into a treasured part of your child’s day.
